AI and education: Kids need AI guidance in school. But who guides the schools

Hadi Partovi (Founder and CEO, Code.org) and Pat Yongpradit (Chief Academic Officer, Code.org), in their contribution to the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, identified a critical gap in educational institutions: the lack of clear guidelines for utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) despite its potential to enhance learning. A recent UNESCO survey underscores this issue, revealing that less than 10% of schools have established formal policies governing AI use. This absence of guidance raises concerns regarding student privacy, educational fairness, and the effectiveness of AI implementation.

Partovi and Yongpradit propose 7 principles for creating responsible AI use guidelines in schools. These principles cover aligning AI with educational goals, following existing regulations, and promoting AI literacy. The focus should be on using AI to support teachers, improve learning, and close the digital divide.
The article emphasizes the importance of human oversight and continuous evaluation of AI use. Overall, it highlights the need for a balanced approach to ensure AI benefits education responsibly.
